Are fillers safe? My honest answer

Are fillers actually safe? I get asked this more than almost anything else, so let me give you my honest answer.

Yes, when they’re done properly, by someone who understands anatomy inside and out, not just how to hold a needle.

That’s really the whole answer. The safety isn’t in the product sitting on the shelf. It’s in the hands using it, and in what that person actually knows about your face, not faces in general, yours.

My background is in advanced skin science: a Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Skin Studies and Aesthetic Practice and I don’t mean some course that’s simply badged ‘Level 4’ for marketing. It’s an Ofqual regulated qualification, properly examined, and it took me two years to complete. I’ve since added Ofqual Level 5 qualifications in microneedling, chemical skin peeling and blemish removal, and trained as a tutor and assessor too, AET plus my assessor qualifications, because between training other practitioners and the business coaching I do, I want to actually know what I’m teaching. I trained properly in the science because I wanted to understand what’s actually happening under the skin, not just what a treatment is meant to do. That knowledge of anatomy and physiology is what keeps a treatment safe. It’s what tells me where not to inject, as much as where to.

Before anything happens, we talk. Properly. I want to know what’s changed for you, what you’re hoping for, and what you’re worried about. I’ll tell you honestly if something will suit you, or if it won’t, because a treatment plan built around your actual face, not a trend, is what keeps you safe and keeps you looking like you.

That’s assuming, of course, that what’s going into your skin is safe and properly approved in the first place, which, working with me, it always will be. And here’s the part I love talking about: the products themselves have come such a long way. I’ve been doing this for years now, and honestly, the last five years have brought the biggest leaps I’ve seen. The introduction of polynucleotides into fillers has been huge, they don’t just add volume, they actively help your own skin repair and regenerate. High density skin boosters can rebuild hydration and structure from within, rather than just plumping. And the treatments now available for the eye area, always the hardest to treat well, are genuinely transformative in a way they simply weren’t a few years ago.

My advice to anyone considering injectables is the same advice I’d give a friend. Research the treatment properly. Understand how it could change your appearance before you say yes to it. And be honest with yourself about your expectations. A good filler treatment can lift your confidence. It won’t change your life, and any practitioner who tells you it will isn’t being straight with you.

That honesty, before the needle ever comes out, is what safe filler actually looks like.
